Nov 25, 2009—NetComply Reporting

Marshall Jones, Managed Services Manager

NetComply's reporting is one of the most powerful and popular features of NetComply; however, as with any powerful tool, reporting can be a little overwhelming to some. In the NetComply department, we are frequently asked for assistance in determining when reports should be run, what reports are needed for auditors, and when reports should be reviewed. Listed below are three reports that we recommend and encourage all Network Administrators to become familiar with.

The "Shared - Executive Summary" report is a report that is often used, but frequently misunderstood. This report is perfect for a general overview of the current status of your institution's network. Keep in mind though; the results of this report are relative to the time at which it is run.  We often  get questions about patch scores being low shortly after Patch Tuesday (the second Tuesday of every month); this is not a problem, rather a result of normal patch management. For the best patch score on this report, run the report just before Patch Tuesday.

In response to customer feedback, we have added a new report under the Software heading, labeled "Shared - Add/Remove w/o Patches." This report will provide you with a list of all programs installed on machines across your network, as well as list the specific machines that each program is installed on. This is a report that is frequently requested by auditors. We recommend that you review this report regularly to determine if there are any programs installed that go against your institution's written Computer Use Policy.

Another report that should be reviewed regularly is the "Shared - Agent Status" report found under the Aggregate Table heading. This report is also frequently requested by auditors, and should be reviewed regularly to ensure all recently added machines have been added and are reporting to NetComply. As more aspects of the machines (e.g. patch management, antivirus, remote control, alerting) are managed from within NetComply, it becomes more and more critical that each machine added to the network is checking in properly.

As always, if you have any questions regarding reporting specifically or NetComply in general, I encourage you to let us know by emailing us at Netcomply@safesystems.com.

Please see Why Does My NetComply Patch Score Change So Frequently? for an in-depth explanation on why it is best to run your Executive Summary report just before Patch Tuesday.

For information on how to schedule these and any report, please see Can NetComply Email Reports?
